The Rolex Middle Sea Race is an offshore classic, taking place this weekend. It is often mentioned in the same breath as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the Rolex Fastnet Race as one of the “must do” 600 milers. Featuring a circular route, two active volcanos and a host of other islands, the course has a unique splendour not to be missed.
The Rolex Middle Sea Race course is approximately 606 nautical miles long and is sailed anti-clockwise, starting from Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta, close to the entrance to Grand Harbour Marina, Malta.
Set during the autumn months, the unpredictable weather demands that each sailor brings some serious commitment and tenacity with them to the start line. Previous years have seen gentle light winds setting out, only to be ending in thunderstorms, or having massive squalls wiping out half the competition. You just never know what you’re going to get.
The current record for the Rolex Middle Sea Race is standing at 47 hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds, set in 2007.
